On Sunday April 24th, Alexander Ian Smith passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital with his family at his side. Survived by his loving wife Christine and his children Alison Hodgson, Douglas Smith (Susan Weltz), Fiona Marcy, and Alistair (Dita) Smith. Very proud grandfather to Alex, Andrew, Eric, Lana, Lauren, Ewan, Kristen, Megan and Kate. He is also survived by his sister Elizabeth Williams (Leven, Scotland). Sincerest thanks to the staff of the 8th floor of the General Hospital for their kind care.
Looking for adventure and armed with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow, Ian came to Canada from Scotland in 1957. He was soon joined by Christine, with a wedding taking place in Quebec City on January 25, 1958. With Christine at his side as a constant supporter, Ian had an accomplished career as an engineer, project manager and consultant. Beginning with his work at Davie Shipbuilding and then moving to Atomic Energy of Canada where he became the project manager of the Cernavoda Project in Constanza, Romania in the 1980’s. A dedicated, knowledgeable and industrious professional, Ian finished his career working for Foreign Affairs as Senior Technical Advisor to the G8 in the nuclear industry. However, his greatest lifetime accomplishments lay in his role as loving father and grandfather and his ability to toss a couch like a caber and play a mean set of spoons. He leaves a great hole in all our hearts.

A private service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday May 2nd at 11 am
